What to write in a birthday card for Mom
She will read it twice and keep it in a drawer, so it is worth one more sentence than “Happy birthday, love you”. Copy any of these as they are, or use the four steps at the bottom to write your own.
From the heart
- Happy birthday, Mom. Everything good in me started with you.
- You made a home out of every place we ever lived.
- I did not know how much you did until I had to do it myself.
- Thank you for every time you waited up.
- You taught me how to love people by loving me first.
- I hear your voice every time I do something right.
- You are the person I call first. You always will be.
- Happy birthday to the one who remembers everything about us.
- If I am kind, it is because I watched you.
- There is nobody I would rather have been raised by.
Funny
- Happy birthday, Mom. I turned out great. You are welcome.
- Thank you for not selling me that one summer.
- You were right about everything. I am putting it in writing once.
- Another year older, and still the only one who knows where anything is.
- Happy birthday to my favorite person to ignore advice from, then follow.
- I got my good looks from you. Dad agrees.
- You deserve a quiet day. We are all coming over.
- Sorry about my teens. Happy birthday.
From a daughter
- Happy birthday, Mom. I catch myself sounding like you and I do not mind.
- You showed me what a strong woman looks like before I knew the words for it.
- I hope I am half the mother you are.
- Every year I understand you a little better and love you a little more.
- You were my first friend. You are still my best one.
- Thank you for letting me become myself, even when it scared you.
From a son
- Happy birthday, Mom. I still measure every meal against yours.
- You believed in me before I gave you much reason to.
- Thank you for every lift, every lunch and every second chance.
- I do not say it enough. You are the best thing that ever happened to me.
- Whatever I get right as a man, you put it there.
- Happy birthday to the first woman who ever loved me, and the toughest.
From all of us
- Happy birthday, Mom. Every one of us is here because of you.
- You held this family together with phone calls and casseroles.
- From all your children, who agree on almost nothing except you.
- We wrote down the things we never say out loud.
- You sang to us first. It is our turn.
- Love, all of us. Every single one.
For a milestone: 50, 60, 70, 80
- Sixty years, and the world is better for every one of them.
- Seventy looks like a full table and all of us around it.
- Fifty years of being the person everyone calls. Take the day off.
- Eighty years of stories. We want to hear every one again.
- You have spent a lifetime making birthdays for other people. This one is yours.
Short ones
- Happy birthday, Mom. Home is you.
- Still my favorite person.
- Thank you for everything. All of it.
- Love you more every year.
How to write your own
- Start with what you call her, not “Mother”.
- Name one thing she does that nobody else does.
- Say one thing you do now because she taught you.
- End with a plan: a call, a lunch, a visit, with a day attached.
