Housewarming gift ideas that are not another candle

By Love, All of Us · October 5, 2026

New homeowners get a lot of candles. They also get three bottles of the same wine and a cheese board they have no room for. A better way to choose is to ask how well you know them, because that decides whether the gift should be useful or personal.

We make one of the gifts below, a family portrait drawn in front of their own house. The other twelve are things we do not sell.

If you know them a little: useful in week one

1. Dinner for the night they move. A delivery voucher, or food you cooked in a dish they can keep. Nobody cooks on moving day.

2. A plant that is hard to kill. A pothos or a snake plant. Write the watering rule on the tag.

3. Good hand soap and a hand towel. It is the first thing every room is missing.

4. A small toolkit. Screwdrivers, a tape measure, picture hooks, a level. First-time owners rarely have one, and they need it within days.

5. A doormat. Plain and good quality. They can choose a funny one themselves later.

If you know them well: for the life they will have there

6. A recipe and the pan it needs. Your recipe, handwritten, with the dish to make it in.

7. A tree or a rose for the garden. Something that grows with the house. Check they have a garden first.

8. A local guide you made yourself. If you know the area: the good bakery, the plumber who answers the phone, the quiet park. One handwritten page.

9. A spare key holder with your number in it. A small joke that is also useful. They will lock themselves out once.

If they are family: something that marks the house as theirs

10. The family drawn at their own front door. Send a photo of the house and one photo of each person, and they are drawn standing in front of their own home, with their names and the street underneath. The red door, the porch and the big tree carry over from your photo. Cars and house numbers are left out. It works for a first house, and it works for the house they are leaving, too.

11. A framed photo of moving day. Take it yourself: them, the boxes, the open front door. Print it and frame it before they have finished unpacking.

12. The address, made permanent. A return-address stamp or a set of notecards with the new address. Useful for the thank-you notes they are about to write.

13. A guest book for the house. Everyone who visits in the first year signs it. Start it yourself on the first page.

A note for agents

If you are a real estate agent choosing a closing gift, you already have the one thing a personal gift needs: the listing photo of the house. A picture of the buyers at their new front door, with the street and the closing year underneath, is a gift made for that sale and no other.

What to write in the card

Short is fine. “New keys, same family.” “May the walls know only good days.” “We cannot wait to be invited over.” If the move was hard won, say so: “You did it.”

The gift we make

Your whole family drawn from your photos, pets included, with every name underneath. On a canvas, a blanket or a mug. You see the finished picture before you pay.

Questions

What is a good housewarming gift? For someone you know a little, something they will use in the first week: food, a plant, good hand soap. For someone close, something made for that house, like a picture of it or of the family in front of it.
How much should you spend on a housewarming gift? There is no rule. A fair guide is what you would spend taking that person out to dinner. For a close relative's first home, several people can go in together on one larger gift.
What do you give someone for their first home?Either something they have not thought to buy yet, such as a toolkit or a doormat, or one thing that marks the house as theirs: its picture, its address, their names.
