Family Christmas gift ideas: one gift for the whole house
By Love, All of Us · October 5, 2026
Buying for a family of five can mean five presents, five guesses and five more things for their shelves. A single gift for the whole house is easier to choose and often better received, because it gives them something to do together. The ideas below are sorted by what that something is.
One of them, a family portrait drawn from photos, is ours. The other eleven are not.
Something to play
1. One good board game. Chosen for the youngest who can play, not the oldest. Ask a game shop what families come back for.
2. A puzzle for the week after Christmas. A thousand pieces, a picture everyone likes, and a board to do it on so it can move off the table.
3. An outdoor game. A badminton set, a soccer goal, a sled if they get snow. Something that gets everyone out of the house the day after Christmas.
Something to eat
4. A breakfast box for Christmas morning. Pancake mix, good syrup, bacon, oranges, hot chocolate. Labeled “do not open until the 25th”.
5. A pizza or pasta night, complete. The flour, the tomatoes, a cutter, an apron for the smallest cook.
6. A basket of things they would not buy. Pick six things you know are good, not a ready-made basket. A handwritten label on each one.
Something to do
7. Tickets for all of them. The holiday show, the game, the zoo lights, the movies. Include the date so it happens.
8. A year’s pass. The museum, the swimming pool, the national park. It keeps giving in March when the tree is long gone.
9. A night away, with the childcare sorted. For parents of small children: one night in a hotel, and you take the children. Write both halves in the card.
Something to keep
10. The whole family in one picture. A drawing of all of them together, made from one photo of each person or one photo of everyone, with every name underneath and the pets included. It can be drawn in the snow by a Christmas tree, or in front of their own house if they moved this year.
11. A box for the year. A good wooden or cardboard box labeled with next year’s date. They put in tickets, drawings and photos as the year goes, and open it next Christmas.
12. A family calendar, already filled in. Every birthday and anniversary written in by you, with a photo for each month.
Giving it
Address it to the whole family by name, children included, and let the youngest open it. If the gift is something to do, say when: a date on the card turns a nice idea into a plan.
For parents and grandparents in particular, there are more ideas in Christmas gifts for parents who have everything and gifts for Grandma from all the grandkids.
